Shillong, Jul 8 (PTI) Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya Justice Revati Mohite Dere on Wednesday urged law students to complement academic learning with practical legal exposure, saying there is no substitute for hard work, perseverance and integrity in the legal profession.
Speaking at the third Foundation Day celebrations of the National Law University (NLU) Meghalaya, Dere encouraged students to view the study of law as a lifelong journey of learning and self-improvement.
She advised students to undertake internships with district court practitioners, public prosecutors, defence lawyers and non-governmental organisations to gain first-hand exposure to the justice delivery system and understand legal issues at the grassroots level.
"There is no substitute for hard work, perseverance and continuous self-improvement in the legal profession," she said, urging aspiring lawyers to remain open to new perspectives and pursue their careers with integrity, dedication and a commitment to serving society.
Earlier, the Chief Justice, who is also the Chancellor of the university, inaugurated the institution's new Moot Court Room and participated in a ceremonial tree plantation to mark the occasion.
The celebrations, held at the Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Auditorium, began with a welcome address by Vice-Chancellor (In-charge) Kerpa Meida Lyngdoh Nongbri, followed by the screening of the university's institutional video highlighting its academic initiatives and achievements.
The university also launched its Student House System during the programme following a presentation by Assistant Director of Sports Rishan Veban Diengdoh.
Registrar Prof (Dr) Baharul Islam proposed the vote of thanks.
The university said the Chief Justice's visit marked a significant milestone in its continued pursuit of excellence in legal education and institutional development. PTI JOP RG
