Jaipur, Jul 1 (PTI) Chambal dacoit Jagan Gurjar, who faced over 100 police cases, was murdered by his cellmate inside a high-security jail in Ajmer using a towel and was cremated in his native village amid heavy police security on Wednesday, police said. Police said 52-year-old Gurjar's body arrived in the village Bhavutipura in Dholpur district, from Ajmer, earlier in the morning, and his three brothers were brought from jails to the village under police security for the funeral. "They were transported separately by teams from the Ajmer jail administration, the Dholpur Special Task Force (STF) and the Dholpur police. Pappu Gurjar was brought from Ajmer, while Lal Singh and Pan Singh were brought from Dholpur jail," police said. Officials said another jail inmate, Vishnu, strangled Gurjar to death with a towel inside the high-security jail in Ajmer on June 29. "Vishnu and Gurjar, both classified as hardcore inmates, were lodged in the same cell," they said. Officials said following the incident, Gurjar's family staged a protest outside the mortuary of Ajmer's JLN Hospital and refused to accept the body on Tuesday. However, after talks with police, the family agreed, following which a post-mortem examination was conducted, they said. Family members said he was arrested last time in March 2026 under the Arms Act. Officials said Gurjar, who had over 100 police cases against him across various stations, came into the limelight in 2008 when he allegedly threatened to blow up the residence of the then chief minister, Vasundhara Raje, in Dholpur. They said he was active in the Chambal ravines in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Police said he later surrendered in 2009 before Congress leader Sachin Pilot. Police said in June 2019, Gurjar was arrested for allegedly beating up two women and tearing their clothes. Nearly 500 policemen were engaged in the operation to arrest Gurjar. He was arrested again in February 2022 for allegedly threatening to kill Girraj Malinga, who was a Congress MLA at the time, they said. Police said Gurjar entered the world of crime in 1994 and was booked in several cases, but they arrested him for the first time in 2001. They said he was subsequently arrested several times and released on bail many times. PTI SDA ASD ASD
