Blackmailed online, woman dies by suicide in Meghalaya; accused held from Gujarat

Shillong, Jun 25 (PTI) A 22-year-old man has been arrested from Gujarat for allegedly blackmailing a Meghalaya woman by threatening to post her private photographs and videos on social media, which forced her to end her life in April, police said here on Thursday. Uttar Pradesh native Sachin Nishad (22) was arrested in Gujarat's Surat on June 23, they said. The woman, a resident of Meghalaya's South West Khasi Hills district, ended her life on April 19, and a police complaint was lodged by her sister, alleging the victim was subjected to repeated threats and harassment online. According to the FIR, the accused had allegedly obtained the victim's private photographs and videos and threatened to circulate them on social media unless she complied with his demands. Investigation into the case led South West Khasi Hills district police to Surat, where Nishad was nabbed, an official said. Further investigation into the case was underway, police said. PTI JOP NSD
