Mumbai, Jul 7 (PTI) The Vihar lake, one of the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to Mumbai, started overflowing on Tuesday night following heavy rainfall over the past few days, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. It was the first of the seven reservoirs to overflow this monsoon. Located inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the lake began overflowing at 9 pm on Tuesday, the civic body said. Last year, it had started overflowing on August 18, 2025. Vihar Lake has a storage capacity of 2,769.8 crore litres, and its surplus water flows into the Mithi River. Mumbai has been receiving incessant rainfall since last week, boosting water levels in the city's reservoirs. The metropolis receives around 3,800 million litres of potable water every day from seven reservoirs -- Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi -- located across Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts. Vihar, Tulsi and Powai Lakes are located within Mumbai. Powai Lake also overflowed earlier this month, but its water is not used for drinking purposes. Tulsi Lake is nearly 96 per cent full and may overflow soon, officials said. PTI KK KRK
