Korba, Jul 14 (PTI) Two medical students, including a woman, were killed and another sustained critical injuries after a coal-laden trailer truck collided with their motorcycle in Chhattisgarh's Korba district on Tuesday morning, police said.
The accident, which sparked a brief protest by local residents, occurred at around 10 am near Dengunala bridge on the Ring Road under Balco police station limits, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Aastha Sharma said.
The three medical students, studying in different colleges, were riding on a single motorcycle when a coal-laden trailer truck crashed into their two-wheeler. The impact of the crash killed the rider, Happy Ratre (25), a resident of Korba, and one of the rear passengers, Reshma Nagesh (24), a Bilaspur native, on the spot, she said.
Another pillion rider, Ragini Yadav (24), a resident of Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi (GPM) district, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the district medical college hospital by Dial-112 emergency response team, where she is undergoing treatment, the official said.
Ratre was studying medicine in Korba, while Nagesh and Yadav were in another college in adjoining Bilaspur. The purpose of the duo's visit to Korba was not immediately known, Sharma informed.
Police seized the trailer truck and launched an investigation into the accident, she said.
Following the accident, a large number of local residents gathered at the spot and staged a protest, briefly disrupting the traffic.
