Kodu Horn Music of Wayanad Adivasi Communities

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Paniya and Kuruma tribal communities of Wayanad play the Kodu, a long curved horn instrument crafted from buffalo or cattle horns. The Kodu is blown at the beginning and end of agricultural ceremonies, funerals, and community council meetings, its deep resonating call serving as a communal signal. Players learn to produce a range of tones by varying lip pressure and breath control. The instrument's sound is believed to ward off evil spirits and call the ancestral gods to witness community events. Each tribal hamlet typically has one or two hereditary Kodu players, whose role carries social prestige. Kerala's Scheduled Tribes Development Department has documented Kodu music as part of the state's intangible cultural heritage inventory.
