Wardha Sevagram Gandhi Khadi Spinning Charkha Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Wardha and Sevagram in Vidarbha Maharashtra are the symbolic heartland of Mahatma Gandhi hand-spinning movement, where the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and associated cooperatives continue khadi cloth production on charkha wheels following Gandhi-era methods. Sevagram cooperative spinners produce count-20 to count-40 hand-spun cotton yarn from Vidarbha organic cotton fields on Amber and Book-style charkha frames. The yarn is woven on frame looms into khadi fabric for government-certified KVIC distribution. Wardha cooperative khadi products — dhotis, sarees, and kurta cloth — bear the genuine khadi handspun certification mark. The Magan Sangrahalaya museum in Wardha preserves Gandhi-era spinning wheel technology. Annual Rashtriya Khadi Mela at Wardha draws buyers from across Maharashtra for authentic charkha-spun fabric.
