Sonipat Wheat Rice Agriculture Delhi Border

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Sonipat district's flat alluvial plains on the Yamuna-Ghaggar interfluves produce high-yielding wheat and paddy in the rabi-kharif rotation, with canal water from the Western Yamuna Canal supplementing tube-well irrigation for both crops. Sonipat's farmers sell wheat at the Sonipat and Gohana grain mandis and paddy at rice procurement centres, benefiting from direct connectivity to Delhi's wholesale grain markets via the GT Road. The district's proximity to Delhi also creates a large vegetable and dairy demand that progressive farmers are meeting by shifting acreage from cereals to vegetables and installing polyhouse floriculture under government schemes.
