Shitalpati Cool Mat Weaving Cooch Behar West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Shitalpati (literally cool mat) is a traditional woven mat and handicraft product of Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts of North Bengal, woven from Murta (Schumannianthus dichotoma) cane split into thin strips. The thin, smooth Murta strips are woven in geometric patterns to produce floor mats, prayer mats, and wall hangings that stay naturally cool to the touch in hot weather. Shitalpati has GI protection and is considered a luxury craft product in Bengali homes. Weavers are primarily women from Hindu and Muslim artisan communities. West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board provides raw cane supply and organises craft fair participation. Shitalpati is exported to Indian diaspora markets in UK, USA, and Gulf countries as a cultural gift item. The craft is listed under the state government's ODOP scheme for Cooch Behar district.
