Shantiniketan Birbhum Leather Batik Craft West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Shantiniketan in Birbhum district West Bengal developed a distinctive leather batik craft tradition rooted in Rabindranath Tagore artisan school (Sriniketan) pedagogical practice. Artisans apply wax-resist patterns on naturally tanned goat leather using a batjik and natural dyes including marigold, pomegranate rind, and indigo to create flat hand bags, sandals, cushion covers, and wall hangings with organic motifs. The Shantiniketan leather goods cooperative in Bolpur markets products to Kolkata boutiques, Shantiniketan Paus Mela fair buyers, and export customers in Europe and Japan. Abanikanta Sen memorial craft cooperatives preserve the original Tagore-era design vocabulary of folk floral and Baul music motif patterns. KVIC cooperative development schemes support raw leather procurement and dye training for new artisan members entering the cluster.
