Sangli Turmeric Haldi Cooperative Maharashtra
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Sangli in the Sangli district of Maharashtra is India largest turmeric wholesale market after Nizamabad, trading Rajapuri and Saleem varieties of turmeric harvested from the Krishna river basin zone. Maharashtra accounts for nearly 25 percent of India turmeric production, with Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, and Solapur districts forming the core of the state turmeric belt. Cooperative primary societies procure turmeric from member farmers at regulated APMC markets and support grading and polishing operations. Sangli turmeric festivals are held annually to celebrate the new crop arrival and promote direct farmer-to-buyer commerce. Sangli traders export cured turmeric fingers to markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The Western Maharashtra cooperative network also handles sugarcane and grapes alongside turmeric in a diversified cash crop economy in the Krishna basin.
