Pune Lavani Tamasha Folk Performance Maharashtra

Lavani is Maharashtra's most vibrant folk dance form, performed by female dancers to the beat of dholki drums and nine-yard saree (nauvari). It combines sensuous dance with socially relevant poetry sung in Marathi. Tamasha is the theatrical performance that incorporates Lavani. Historically patronised by the Peshwas, Lavani is now performed at folk festivals, cultural events, and increasingly in film. The Maharashtra government has launched programs to preserve and support Lavani artists.
