Ashwagandha and Safed Musli Herb Cultivation in Osmanabad
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Osmanabad district's dry stony soils are well-suited to the cultivation of adaptogenic medicinal herbs, particularly ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and safed musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum). Both plants thrive in well-drained soils with limited irrigation, fitting Osmanabad's rain-fed agricultural context. Ashwagandha cultivation requires 6-7 months from sowing (July) to root harvest (January-February). The dried root is sold to pharmaceutical companies and Ayurvedic manufacturers in Pune, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Safed musli, a wild forest plant of immense commercial value as a tonic herb, is being domesticated on farm plots in Osmanabad as wild populations are overharvested. Traditional folk uses include ashwagandha milk with honey as a general tonic and safed musli in traditional preparations for male vitality. The ICAR National Research Centre for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (NRCMAP) provides technical support to farmers in Osmanabad for medicinal herb cultivation.
