Narayanpet Saree Telangana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Narayanpet sarees from Narayanpet district of Telangana are cotton or cotton-silk sarees woven on pit looms with characteristic checked or striped body and a contrasting broad plain-coloured border in a running temple design. The sarees use tightly twisted cotton yarn in earthy colours — red, green, maroon, and black — and a plain woven or zari border. The distinctive Narayanpet saree is identified by its straight-running border without any supplementary weft motif work, giving a clean geometric look. Weavers from the Padmasali and Devanga communities produce sarees in the Narayanpet cooperative cluster. GI certification was granted in 2010. The Telangana Handloom and Textile Development Corporation promotes Narayanpet sarees through Lepakshi brand stores.
