Muzaffarpur Maize Hybrid Farming Gangetic Plains

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Muzaffarpur district has emerged as a centre of hybrid maize cultivation in the Rabi and Kharif seasons, with farmers growing Pioneer and Dekalb hybrid varieties that achieve 40 to 50 quintal per acre yields under irrigation, driven by the demand from Bihar's expanding poultry and starch industries. The district's Gandak river alluvial soils are well-suited for maize, and the Bihar Agricultural University's extension work in Muzaffarpur has demonstrated that maize can be more profitable than paddy in districts where canal irrigation is unreliable. Muzaffarpur maize is sold to feed mills in Darbhanga and Vaishali that supply Bihar's booming broiler poultry sector.
