Lohardaga Oraon Embroidery Craft Tribal Jharkhand

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Oraon women of Lohardaga district practice a distinctive embroidery tradition on white cotton cloth using chain-stitch and satin-stitch patterns in bright woollen or silk thread that is used to decorate saris, blouses, and wall hangings for ritual occasions. The embroidery patterns feature geometric borders, stylised animals, and the symbolic banana tree motif associated with Oraon marriage ceremonies; each design carries community meaning legible to Oraon cultural insiders. Lohardaga's craft cooperative produces embroidered items for the craft export market through Jharkhand Handicrafts Development Corporation, providing supplementary income to Oraon women who embroider during the agricultural off-season.
