Kerala Ayurveda and Kalari Medicine Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Kerala has the world most complete living tradition of classical Ayurveda, maintained through hereditary vaidya (physician) families who receive training in classical Ayurvedic texts (Ashtanga Hridayam, Charaka Samhita) alongside medicinal plant identification, panchakarma treatment, and traditional pharmacy. The Ashtavaidya families of Kerala — eight hereditary lineages — represent the highest expression of this knowledge. Alongside classical Ayurveda, the Kalaripayattu tradition maintains its own system of marma (vital point) therapy for treating injuries. Kerala forests provide the raw ingredients for classical Ayurvedic formulations: aralu, cherula, muringa, punarnava, brahmi, and hundreds of other medicinal species. The Arya Vaidya Sala (Kottakkal), established 1902, is the largest traditional Ayurvedic pharmacy and hospital in the world. Medical tourism from Europe, Japan, and the Middle East for panchakarma treatment contributes significantly to Kerala economy. Traditional Ayurvedic plant knowledge is documented by the Kerala Institute of Local Administration.
