Karnal district in northern Haryana on the Western Yamuna Canal is the heartland of India's green revolution for rice — the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) at Karnal is India's premier dairy science institution (established 1923) developing improved cattle breeds, milk processing technology, and dairy farmer training. Karnal and Kurukshetra districts grow Basmati rice — the long-grain aromatic variety with GI protection — on the canal-irrigated fields of the Karnal-Ambala belt, and "Karnal Basmati" is one of the premium grades in India's Basmati export trade. Karnal's wheat and sugarcane are processed in the district's flour mills and sugar mills. Kurukshetra — site of the Mahabharata war and the Bhagavad Gita's recitation — is an hour from Karnal.
