Karnal Basmati Rice Research and Cultivation Haryana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Karnal district of Haryana is the research capital of Indian Basmati and the home of the National Rice Research Station and the Directorate of Wheat Research, both of which have developed the improved Basmati varieties including Pusa 1121, Pusa Basmati 1509, and Haryana Basmati-1 that dominate export production today. Karnal itself and the adjacent districts of Kurukshetra, Kaithal, and Ambala are major Basmati growing areas in the legally demarcated Basmati GI zone, and Haryana farmers have adopted direct seeded rice and mechanical transplanting innovations that reduce transplanting labour cost while maintaining the aromatic grain quality. The Haryana Basmati procurement system involves mill drying, milling, and export packing at the Karnal rice mill cluster, which is among India largest Basmati milling concentrations, and Haryana exports approximately 1.5 million tonnes of Basmati annually. The distinctive feature of Haryana Basmati cultivation is the late-variety selection to coincide with the cool October-November temperature during grain filling that maximises 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline aroma compound synthesis in the maturing grain.
