Kaithal Kunjpura Qawwali Sufi Music Tradition

Kunjpura, a town in Kaithal district, was historically a centre of Sufi qawwali music with lineages of musicians tracing their training to the Dargah tradition of the Yamuna-Ghaggar interfluve. The qawwali tradition of Kunjpura features Haryanvi Punjabi vernacular devotional texts set to classical qawwali rhythm cycles, performed at urs death anniversaries of Sufi saints buried in the district's dargahs. This syncretic musical heritage, maintained by hereditary qawwal families, represents the shared Sufi culture of the pre-Partition Haryana-Punjab plain that cuts across Hindu-Muslim community lines.
