Jhajjar Prajapati Black Pottery Haryana Reduction Kiln

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Jhajjar district in Haryana preserves a Prajapati community pottery tradition where artisans produce jet-black earthenware using reduction firing in underground clamp kilns. Jhajjar black pottery differs from Azamgarh UP in using finer Haryana riverbend clay and achieving a denser, harder surface through prolonged high-temperature reduction that vitrifies the clay body partially. Products include storage pitchers, water vessels, diyas, and decorative bowls sold at Haryana Haat exhibitions and Surajkund Crafts Mela. Cooperative potters in Bahadurgarh village receive a monthly artisan stipend under Haryana Karigar Scheme. NIFT Delhi has collaborated with Jhajjar cooperative to design contemporary tableware ranges inspired by traditional black pottery forms for restaurant and hotel buyers. The craft was revived from near-extinction in the 2010s through a joint state-KVIC intervention.
