Hoshiarpur Bone Inlay Sheesham Wood Furniture Punjab
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Hoshiarpur in Punjab is renowned for inlay wood furniture using intricate geometric and floral patterns of polished bone, synthetic ivory, and mother-of-pearl set into sheesham and deodar wood panels. The craft uses a technique brought from Central Asia during the Mughal period and refined by Hoshiarpur royal court craftsmen. Artisans cut tiny inlay pieces from buffed buffalo bone, shape them with fine files, and press them into precisely routed channels in sheesham furniture frames. Completed pieces include bedheads, wardrobe panels, cabinets, and decorative room screens exported to Gulf, European, and North American buyers. Hoshiarpur Cooperative Inlay Artisans received a KVIC cluster development grant and a GI tag recognition application has been filed. Over 5,000 artisan families across Hoshiarpur, Dasuya, and Mukerian depend on the bone-inlay cluster for livelihood.
