Hooghly Barrackpore Cotton Handloom Weaving Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Hooghly district on the Ganga's west bank between Kolkata and Burdwan is one of West Bengal's oldest handloom centres, with the towns of Chandernagor, Serampore, Barrackpore, and Dhaniakhali producing cotton fabrics including dhotar (dhoti), gamcha, bed-sheet, and cotton saris on pit-loom establishments that employed thousands of weaver families in the 19th-century textile economy. Dhaniakhali cotton saris from Hooghly district are particularly valued for their soft-washed durability and simple geometric border patterns in natural and dyed cotton, and they have a Geographical Indication tag that distinguishes authentic Dhaniakhali sarees from mill-made imitations. The district's colonial-era industrial heritage includes Serampore's Danish colonial church and Chandernagor's French colonial buildings, reflecting the Hugli river's role as Bengal's pre-Calcutta trading hub.
