Mashobra Forest Sanctuary and Green Belt Ecology Shimla

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Mashobra wildlife sanctuary adjacent to Shimla protects the remaining forest cover in the immediate vicinity of the state capital. The oak-rhododendron forests here are critical water catchments for Shimla's water supply. Traditional knowledge of forest management including timing of dead wood removal, seasonal collection rights, and spring protection practices was developed by communities around Shimla over generations. Bird watching in Mashobra sanctuary has become a significant eco-tourism activity revealing biodiversity within minutes of a major city. Community participation in forest protection through Van Panchayats around Shimla district demonstrates that urban-adjacent forests can be protected through traditional governance mechanisms when legal frameworks support community rights.
