Bajra and Maize Traditional Crop Heritage Hamirpur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Hamirpur district's lower elevation areas traditionally cultivated bajra (pearl millet) and maize as primary food grains suited to warm dry conditions. Maize (makki) remains a dietary staple with makki ki roti paired with mustard greens (sarson ka saag) during winter. Traditional maize varieties with large colourful cobs were selected over generations for flavour and storability. Maize cobs dried on rooftops and in storerooms (kothi) provide food security through winter. Traditional knowledge of maize cultivation including soil preparation, seasonal planting timing, and pest management uses minimal purchased inputs. Livestock are fed maize stalks and leaves as fodder. The maize-wheat rotation system maintains soil fertility through the organic matter returned by maize roots and residue.
