Chitradurga Fort Vijayanagara Deccan Plateau Ecology

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Chitradurga district on the Deccan plateau contains the Chitradurga Fort — a multi-layered 18th century Nayak and Hyder Ali fortification built across natural granite boulders that form concentric natural walls requiring minimal building material — one of Karnataka's most dramatic fortress landscape heritage sites. The district's Onake Obavva memorial recalls the legendary woman who defended a narrow pass (onake — pounding rod) in Chitradurga Fort singlehandedly against Hyder Ali's soldiers, a folk hero story taught in Karnataka's schools. Chitradurga grows onion, sunflower, and jowar on its semi-arid plateau, and the Tungabhadra's upper catchment forests in the district's eastern hills shelter sloth bear and leopard.
