Apatani Rice Fish Integrated Farming Arunachal Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Apatani tribe of the Ziro valley in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh have developed a unique integrated rice-fish-pig farming system on the waterlogged valley floor, creating one of the most productive traditional agricultural systems in the eastern Himalaya, recognized by FAO as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) in 2016. In the Apatani system, rice is grown in permanently irrigated paddy fields (lapang) while fish (primarily Cyprinus carpio) are co-cultured in the paddies, with pig stalls built directly over the fish ponds so that pig waste fertilizes the water and feeds the fish, which in turn fertilize the rice paddy through their excrement and bottom feeding. The elevated yields from this integrated system allow the Apatani to achieve rice productivity comparable to irrigated plains despite the cold mountain climate at 1,524 meters elevation. Apatani women are known for their distinctive facial tattoo and brass nose plug (yabing) tradition, now largely discontinued in younger generations. The Ziro Valley, surrounded by the Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage inscription, with the GIAHS agricultural system and the community's forest management practices cited as outstanding universal values.
