Wancho Tribal Woodcarving Longding Arunachal Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Wancho tribe of Longding district in Arunachal Pradesh produce a distinctive tradition of figurative woodcarving using dao (machete) and chisel on soft local wood, creating morung (community hall) posts, memorial figures, wooden stools with carved human or animal legs, log drums, and ritual objects decorated with geometric and figurative warrior and animal motifs. The Wancho were formerly known for headhunting traditions that influenced their art vocabulary — human figures, trophy-head forms, and warrior effigies are recurring subjects — and today the art is maintained as a community heritage and craft livelihood. Wancho morung posts carved with intertwined snakes, human figures, and sun-moon motifs are among the most powerful examples of northeast tribal figurative art. The Longding district government and Arunachal Pradesh State Museum have supported documentation of Wancho woodcarving. The craft is sold through state emporiums and is increasingly featured in Indian tribal art exhibitions. Younger Wancho artists are adapting the traditional warrior motifs to smaller decorative objects for the craft market.
