Ananthagiri Hills Forest Ecology and Tiger Corridor of Vikarabad
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Vikarabad district in Telangana's southwestern corner contains the Ananthagiri Hills — forested ranges forming part of the wildlife corridor connecting the Nallamala-Nagarjunasagar Tiger Reserve with the Maharashtra forests. The forest is dominated by dry deciduous teak and mixed species with bamboo in the moister valleys. Tigers from Nagarjunasagar have been recorded in the Ananthagiri Hills, confirming the corridor's functional importance. Traditional Gond and Lambada communities in the forest fringe maintain non-lethal wildlife management practices — traditional noise-making techniques to drive predators away from cattle rather than hunting them. The Vikarabad Forest Division has established joint forest management committees in buffer zone villages.
