Vijayapura (Bijapur) district in northern Karnataka is the capital of the Adil Shahi Sultanate (1489-1686), whose architectural legacy — the Gol Gumbaz (world's second largest dome, 1656), Ibrahim Rauza, Jama Masjid, and Malik-e-Maidan (world's largest cast bronze cannon) — is among India's finest examples of Deccan Sultanate architecture combining Persian, Turkish, and Hindu architectural elements. The Gol Gumbaz's whispering gallery effect — where a whisper on one side of the 38-metre dome can be heard on the opposite side — is an acoustic marvel that draws tourists from across the world. Vijayapura grows sugarcane, jowar, and pulses on the Deccan black soil and has a tradition of the Siddhi community — descendants of African slaves brought by the Adil Shahis — who maintain the Dhamal folk dance tradition.
