Varanasi Banarasi Brocade Silk Zari Weaving Uttar Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Vanarasi (Banaras) silk brocade is India's most celebrated woven textile — produced by Ansari Muslim weavers in Varanasi's Madanpura, Badi Bazar, and Lallapura neighbourhoods on jacquard and draw looms using pure silk warp with real gold or silver zari (metallic thread) supplementary weft to produce floral, paisley (boteh), and jali (lattice) brocade patterns on sarees, dupattas, and dress fabric. The Banarasi brocade tradition dates at least to the 17th century Mughal court, and its design vocabulary draws on Persian floral realism adapted to Hindu wedding aesthetic preferences. A single Banarasi katan silk saree with real gold zari takes 15-30 days to weave depending on density of brocade and can cost Rs 25,000-5,00,000. The GI-tagged fabric is legally protected from imitation, with the Varanasi Weavers Service Centre running zari authenticity testing. Varanasi has approximately 1,00,000 active handloom weavers whose product sustains bridal wear markets across India, the Gulf NRI diaspora, and international luxury buyers.
