Uttarkashi district in the upper Bhagirathi valley contains Gangotri — the glacial source of the Ganga (Bhagirathi, originating from Gaumukh glacier) and one of India's most sacred pilgrimage sites. The district's deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara) forests — protected under Forest Department management — supply the best-quality timber for furniture and construction in Uttarakhand. Uttarkashi's Harshil valley (where Victor Banerjee filmed the 1984 Ganga Yamuna) grows the finest Harshil rajma (kidney beans) — a premium bean variety sold across North India. The district's Garhwali weaving tradition produces woollen tweed (pattu) fabric woven on frame looms by village cooperatives. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi trains India's high-altitude mountaineers.
