Sattal Bird Sanctuary and Forest Ecology Nainital

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Sattal (Seven Lakes) complex near Bhimtal in Nainital district forms a unique freshwater ecosystem supporting exceptional bird diversity with over 500 species recorded including rare migratory visitors. The oak-rhododendron forests surrounding the lakes create microhabitats for specialised species. The Christian ashram established by E. Stanley Jones at Sattal has maintained the lake ecosystem since 1930 through a philosophy of ecological stewardship integrated with spiritual practice. Local naturalist guides carry deep observational knowledge of seasonal bird movements, nesting sites, and habitat preferences. The Sattal ecosystem demonstrates how traditional conservation practice rooted in reverence for nature can maintain biodiversity in accessible forest areas.
