Traditional Lime Plaster and Stone Masonry Champawat Hills

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The hill architecture of Champawat district employs traditional lime plaster (surkhi plaster) made by burning local limestone and mixing with fine sand and organic additives like rice water or jaggery which improve adhesion and durability. Stone masons (Silawat) possess hereditary skills in dressing local slate and schist into building components. Traditional mortar joints using lime putty allow buildings to flex slightly during seismic events providing resilience to earthquakes common in the Himalayan zone. These traditional building techniques are increasingly valued for heritage restoration and for constructing eco-friendly buildings. Government programs support skill transmission to younger generations through apprenticeship with master craftsmen.
