Chandika Devi Temple and Shakti Worship Traditions Bageshwar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Chandika Devi temple near Bageshwar exemplifies the Shakti worship tradition central to Kumaoni religious life. Hill communities maintain strong devotion to local manifestations of the goddess believed to protect villages from natural disasters, disease, and misfortune. Traditional priest families (Pujaris) maintain ritual knowledge specific to each temple including seasonal worship calendar, specific offerings, and the oral mythology of how the deity manifested at that location. Annual jatras (deity processions) where the goddess image is carried through the village territory mark and renew protective boundaries. Folk songs called Devgeets describe the deities and their powers and are sung during festivals by women collectively. This living goddess worship tradition maintains community cohesion while transmitting oral literature and religious knowledge.
