Gorur Hemavathi Reservoir and Irrigation Heritage of Tumkur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Hemavathi river, originating in the Western Ghats, flows through Hassan district before being impounded by the Gorur Dam, whose reservoir and canal network irrigates a vast area including parts of Tumkur district. Traditional irrigation on the Hemavathi's middle reaches used stone anicuts and seasonal diversion channels managed by farming communities on a rotation basis. The submerged Gorur village — a prosperous settlement along the river — was the most symbolically significant loss when the reservoir was filled in the 1970s, and the community's displacement story is a touchstone in Karnataka's debates about development-induced displacement. The Hemavathi command area has transformed Tumkur's dry agriculture zones into irrigated paddy and sugarcane regions.
