Tiruvannamalai Girivalam Pilgrimage Arunachala Tamil Nadu

Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu is one of the five Pancha Bhuta Sthalas of Shaivite tradition — the site where Shiva manifests as Agni (fire element) at the Annamalaiyar temple — and the scene of a monthly pilgrimage circuit (girivalam, meaning circumambulation of the hill) around the sacred Arunachala hill, performed by over a million devotees on the full moon night (Karthigai Deepam) and by hundreds of thousands monthly on Purnima. The Arunachala girivalam route is 14 kilometres around the base of the hill, traditionally walked barefoot in a clockwise direction to accumulate spiritual merit. The Karthigai Deepam festival in November-December is the most important event: a fire beacon is lit on the summit of Arunachala, visible for kilometres, symbolising the column of fire that Shiva manifested when challenged by Brahma and Vishnu. The ashram of Ramana Maharshi at the foot of Arunachala draws international spiritual seekers in addition to Tamil Hindu pilgrims. The girivalam supports a large informal economy of food stalls, flower vendors, and dhupam (incense) sellers along the route. The Tiruvannamalai town infrastructure — road, guesthouses, and civic facilities — has been transformed by the scale of monthly pilgrimage. The Tamil Nadu government and the Annamalaiyar temple trust manage the Karthigai festival logistics.
