Surendranagar Cotton Tarkashi Wire Weaving Livestock Gujarat

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Surendranagar district in central Saurashtra is the heart of Gujarat's cotton growing belt on the black cotton soil Bhal (low-lying grassland) where Bt cotton cultivation produces the raw material for Surat's textile mills. The district's Halvad town is famous for tarkashi (silver and gold wire inlay on wood and metal) jewellery and decorative craft — a Gujarat-specific metal inlay work tradition where silver wire is hammered into grooves on wooden bases creating geometric patterns on furniture, trays, and frames. Surendranagar's Dhrangadhra salt pans and the Little Rann of Kutch wild ass sanctuary border the district's eastern edge, supporting both industrial salt production and wildlife conservation.
