Vamsadhara River Anicut and Traditional Irrigation of Srikakulam
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Vamsadhara river flowing through Srikakulam district has supported agriculture through a series of traditional anicuts (diversion weirs) built by local chieftains and communities over centuries. The most significant is the Narayanapuram Anicut, built in 1892 during the British period, which irrigates over 100,000 acres of paddy land in coastal Srikakulam. Traditional tank systems in the district's upland areas captured monsoon runoff for supplemental irrigation of dry crops. Community water management bodies (neeruganti associations) historically maintained equitable distribution of canal water among upstream and downstream farmers. The Vamsadhara project — a modern dam completed in 2005 — now provides storage-based irrigation to complement the run-of-river anicut system.
