Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Sitamarhi in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar is the traditionally identified birthplace of Sita the consort of Rama in the Ramayana, creating a significant pilgrimage economy centred on the Janaki Sthan temple complex. Sitamarhi is part of the Ramayana circuit linking sites across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh for religious tourism. The district sits on the Nepal border where the Janakpur Dham temple in Nepal Janakpur zone is the principal Ramayana pilgrimage site. Cross-border religious tourism creates cooperative border economy with small traders, pilgrimage service providers, and accommodation operators organised in cooperative formats. Sitamarhi district produces sugarcane, paddy, and maize on the Terai plain soil. Women artisan cooperatives in Sitamarhi produce Mithila painting Madhubani art style closely related to the tradition in adjacent Madhubani district. The Sitamarhi-Janakpur Ramayana railway line under construction will transform the pilgrimage corridor economy.
