Sirsa Haryana Desi Cotton Khadi Spinning Cooperative

Sirsa in southwestern Haryana is the most cotton-diversified district of Haryana, where cooperative farmers cultivate both hybrid Bt varieties and traditional desi (Gossypium arboreum) short-staple cotton on canal-irrigated black cotton soil from the Bhakra-Gang Nahr irrigation network. Desi cotton cooperative members supply hand-ginned fibre to Haryana Khadi Board for Ambar charkha spinning and handloom weaving of breathable school uniform fabric and summer kurta cloth. The shorter-fibre desi cotton is well-suited to traditional charkha spinning techniques that produce coarser but more breathable fabric compared to Bt hybrid. Cooperative water user associations in Sirsa manage canal irrigation scheduling and are piloting solar-powered pump-sets to reduce groundwater depletion. Organic desi cotton certification is supported through APEDA export scheme for specialty fabric buyers.
