Dholbaji: Drumming Traditions of Sawai Madhopur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Dholbaji community of Sawai Madhopur district are hereditary dhol (large barrel drum) players, employed at weddings, religious processions, and harvest festivals. Dholbajis tune their double-headed drums using rope lacings and wedge bracing to produce two distinct tones, the bass boom of the left skin and the sharp crack of the right. Their repertoire distinguishes dozens of taal (rhythmic cycles) for different occasions: a wedding procession has a different rhythm from a funeral, a deity procession from a harvest dance. Knowledge of which taal to play and when is part of the family's hereditary professional identity. Dholbajis also perform Ramleela accompaniment and serve as community announcement makers (naubat). Under MNREGA cultural provisions, some Dholbaji families receive income support for traditional performance preservation.
