Saharanpur Sheesham Mango Wood Carving Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Saharanpur in western Uttar Pradesh is one of the country premier wood carving districts, with over 25,000 artisans producing carved furniture, decorative screens, and architectural woodwork for domestic and export markets. Craftsmen use seasoned sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo) and mango hardwood logs, cutting intricate arabesque, floral, and geometric patterns with bow-drills, chisels, and fine gouges inherited through family apprenticeship. The tradition grew under Mughal patronage as artisans supplied carved jali screens and pierced arches to imperial courts and havelis. Cooperative workshops today produce export-quality carved beds, mirror frames, and room dividers for European and Gulf buyers. Saharanpur wood carving received a Geographical Indication tag in 2010. Adjacent cooperative mango orchards supply mature salvage wood to the carving cluster, creating a circular economy from orchard to workshop.
