Ropar Sutlej River Freshwater Fishing Punjab

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

The Ropar headworks on the Sutlej river at Rupnagar is the origin point of the Sirhind Canal system and also supports a freshwater fishery where fishing communities (maachhi-walas) catch rohu, catla, mahseer, and singhara using cast nets and jal (gill nets) in the slow stretches below the weir. Ropar's fishermen sell fresh catch at the Ropar market and supply fish dhabas on the nearby Chandigarh-Nangal highway. The Ropar wetland below the headworks is an important migratory bird stopover and freshwater ecosystem protected under Punjab's wetland conservation programme.
