Rewari Haryana Brassware Cooperative
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Rewari district in Haryana has a centuries-old tradition of brassware manufacturing, producing utensils, lamps, hookah bases, and decorative items. Thathera craftsmen — listed by UNESCO under Intangible Cultural Heritage — use the same sand-casting and hand-hammering technique in Rewari as their counterparts in Jandiala Guru, Punjab. Cooperative workshops in Rewari old city area produce brass items sold through Haryana Khadi emporiums and weekly village haats. Rewari brass cooperative members include Hindu Thathera and Muslim Lohar artisans who have co-existed in the craft for generations. Urban demand for vintage brass decor has revived the cooperative, with online platforms and boutique buyers seeking hand-hammered brass from Rewari.
