Vindhya Tribal Herbal Medicine of Baiga and Gond Communities Rewa

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Baiga and Gond healers of the Rewa forests are custodians of medicinal knowledge specific to the Vindhya plateau ecosystem. Patalkot valley, accessible by deep gorge from Rewa, is particularly rich in medicinal plants. Kali haldi — black turmeric — is used for liver conditions and jaundice. Shatavari root is prepared as a tonic for postpartum recovery. Bhumiamalaki treats kidney and urinary disorders. Healer families maintain kitchen gardens of cultivated medicinal plants alongside wild collection routes in the forest. Knowledge is transmitted through apprenticeship spanning seven to ten years. A son watches, assists, and gradually takes on cases before receiving the full corpus of plant names, preparation methods, and dosing protocols. Some Rewa healers are formally registered under AYUSH and operate rural health camps supported by the state government.
