Rajnandgaon Gond Art Patangarh Tribal Painting Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Rajnandgaon district is the home of Gond patangarh (Gondi pictographic) painting — a tradition revived by master artist Jangarh Singh Shyam (1960-2001) who was discovered by artist J. Swaminathan and brought to Bharat Bhavan Bhopal, transforming Gond dot-and-dash forest imagery into internationally exhibited contemporary art. Jangarh's legacy inspired a generation of Gond artists from Patangarh village whose work is now sold through galleries in New Delhi, Paris, London, and New York, with some works commanding lakhs of rupees — a radical economic transformation for a tribal community historically dependent on subsistence farming. Rajnandgaon's Ghunghat palace and Rajnandgaon fort reflect the district's princely state heritage, and the district grows rice and sugarcane on its alluvial plains.
