Pratapgarh Thewa Art Jewellery Gold Glass Rajasthan GI
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Pratapgarh district in southeastern Rajasthan is the only place in the world where Thewa jewellery is made — a 17th century court jewellery tradition of fusing 24-carat gold sheets embossed with Mughal miniature-painting style motifs onto coloured glass (green, red, blue, maroon), creating translucent medallions depicting royal hunting scenes, Radha-Krishna, and floral borders. Thewa is made exclusively by the Rajsooni family of Pratapgarh who have maintained the craft's secret technique for 300+ years; the GI-tagged product commands prices of Rs 5,000-500,000 per piece at galleries in Jaipur, Delhi, and international exhibitions. The district grows wheat, mustard, and gram on its black cotton soil near the Vindhya hills.
