Patan Patola: The World's Most Complex Double Ikat Silk

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Patan Patola is one of the world's most extraordinary textile traditions, a double-ikat silk weaving technique in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed in precise patterns before weaving, so that the finished cloth shows perfect pattern registration on both faces. The Salvi family of Patan has practised this technique for 700 years, and today only a handful of master weavers remain. Each saree takes 4-6 months to complete. Traditional Patola patterns include the Narigol (woman-and-flower), Paan-phool (betel leaf and flower), and geometric border sequences transmitted through family design memory. Patola sarees were historically gifted by Gujarati merchant families to royalty across Southeast Asia, where they became sacred objects. A genuine Patola saree can cost Rs 5-25 lakh. The GI tag for Patan Patola was granted in 2013. The Patola Heritage Centre in Patan preserves design archives and conducts public demonstrations.
