Handloom Cotton Weaving Heritage of Parbhani

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Parbhani district has a tradition of handloom cotton weaving, particularly in the production of cotton lungis, dhotis, and sarees for local consumption. The Khatri weaver community maintains workshops in Parbhani city and taluka towns, producing plain-woven and striped cotton cloth on frame looms. The district's historical cotton production (raw cotton was a major Marathwada crop) sustained local weaving industry until cheap mill cloth undercut handloom production in the early 20th century. Post-independence KVIC programmes revived some handloom activity, particularly Khadi cotton spinning and weaving. Women's self-help groups in Parbhani are being trained in weaving as part of rural enterprise development programmes. Traditional weaving knowledge of natural indigo and lac-dye resist-printing on handloom cotton cloth is documented in Parbhani district records but is no longer commonly practiced, preserved mainly in family sample collections.
